Comments, Premium Users, Articles, Emails, and More

Okay folks, It's been a while. Let's have a chat.

First, I originally hoped to continue working on the site several months ago. However, during this time I've experienced a number of additional health issues related to last year's fiasco. I have one final surgery on this Monday, May 7th. I'll be hospitalized for 5-7 days and then, although I still have some issues, the major stuff will be out of the way and I hope to resume working on the site.

Content

When I am able, content will return. Some articles have gotten WAAAY out of date, and others have errors or the syntax for a particular gem has changed. I am coming up with a plan to deal with this while adding new content.

Regarding content errors, rather than leaving a comment (unless it's an informative one), email me so that I may correct the issue.

Pro/Premium Users

For now, do NOT subscribe and immediately cancel. Doing so will cause you to not get premium benefits. This is due to the delay in updating the database. I recommend waiting 24 hours to cancel. Should you have an issue, email me and I will take care of it. I intend to fix this issue ASAP.

I plan on changing how the pro user system works in the near future.

First and foremost, RichOnRails.com does not make millions (or even hundreds of thousands) of dollars, nor was that ever the goal. Premium users and advertising pay for the hosting, domain, a creative cloud subscription, Cloudflare, and after taxes/deductions there is some money left over.

Moving forward, subscriptions, early access, and premium content will continue, however, I will be introducing a points system. Premium users can optionally spend these points to unlock premium articles for others that may not have the money to spend on a premium subscription. The number of points required to unlock an article will be based on the effort that goes into working on it. Once an article is unlocked, it will be unlocked for all. Premium users may opt to not use this feature at all, or they may opt to automatically have their points allocated. Ads will show for free users, but of course premium users will still be ad free. Premium users may optionally choose to have their name and a link to their site listed at the bottom of the article as well as a separate page listing sponsors.

A lower tier subscription that removes ads only will be introduced. It will also have a point system behind it.

Companies can also directly sponsor an article unlock, but I'm still working through this.

The goal is to help make quality content free for as many people as possible. It takes a lot of time coming up with new content, writing about it, doing videos, etc. and I would like to dedicate even more resources into doing this. Not just for Ruby on Rails either, but popular Javascript frameworks and much more.

Comments

I know that a large number of comments haven't been approved, it's been very hard to keep up with the extremely high volume of comments coming from users. Due to spam bots, I can't just allow all commenting to pass through either. Recaptcha can also be bypassed by spam bots, and I don't want to inconvenience users by making them check a box.

I intend to overhaul the comments system to better suite the needs of the site and it's users. In the meantime, I will be occasionally sifting through comments and approving them as best I can.

Some users ask how to do additional stuff beyond the scope of the article. This is great and I encourage users to help each other out. To that end, I will be extending the commenting system to allow users to opt in to receiving comment replies via email. I cannot spend much time helping out with these types of questions though, so if you don't get a reply from myself or a user, try stack overflow.

More

Certain features of the site stopped working at one point due to an upgrade on the back-end. This caused delayed_job to not function properly and a lot of jobs got queued up. Among other things this included the Contact Us form as well as certain auto generated emails. I will not be manually going through the jobs as there are thousands of them queued up.
