Site Changes and Enhancements...

Over the next couple of months, I hope to roll out a number of enhancements. These include:

  • Internal Commenting System to Replace Disqus — Disqus is an awesome commenting platform, but I'm not happy with the privacy implications of using it. In addition, I'd like to do some cool stuff with the commenting system, and I can't do that while using Disqus.
  • A Message Forum — I've often questioned the need for a forum, but I believe it can help users who are having day to day issues with their Rails projects
  • A Regular Article Release Schedule — Currently articles get released 'when I have time'. I'd like to move to a regular schedule of twice a week for articles.
  • Some Type of Premium Membership —  My goal when starting this website was to build high quality Ruby on Rails tutorials and give them away completely free. I hope to continue to stick to that goal. I am trying out a few different ways of raising revenue for the website. Revenue earned is used to pay for stuff like hosting (RichOnRails is hosted on a dedicated large instance on Amazon EC2.)

While that's great, I'd like to be able to take more time off from work to be able to write even more content. This means I may eventually offer a premium membership. Premium memberships would offer things like ad-free article viewing, kindle delivery, downloadable articles, and much more. The membership would be voluntary, all content would still be freely available. I'm still working out the specifics, but this would come later on (sometime next year).

In the mean time, I'm going to be experimenting with a new Google offering. The first time you load a page, you'll be shown a survey. Answer it, and you'll gain access to the site for a period of time. If this goes well, I may keep it and remove the ads from the website. These surveys could possibly take the place of the premium membership offering.

If you have any feedback or things you'd like to see, please leave a comment below. I'm always open to your thoughts and suggestions.
